A Letter from Jeff & Kate

Dear Neighbors,

Jeff and I are writing to share some exciting news about the future of the Loma Mar Store. After years of working together with our incredible team, we are stepping into a new chapter, and while we’re pulling back from the day-to-day involvement, the heart of what you love will continue—and it’s about to grow.

The Loma Mar Store is transitioning from a husband-and-wife-owned, for-profit business into a community-driven, board-led project called the Loma Mar Outpost. This next chapter will allow the store to do so much more for the communities of Loma Mar, Pescadero, San Gregorio, and La Honda, while still offering the same great food, music, and gathering space that has become such a cherished part of life here.

Running the store has been about building community, and it’s been a fun and rewarding project to do alongside Marcy, Nichole, and our team. We are so grateful for the community we’ve gained and for how the store has shown its value during stressful times. It was a true privilege to welcome folks home after the CZU fire forced evacuations for many days. We’ve really enjoyed this project and have learned so much from it, and we’re deeply thankful for all the support and connections we’ve built together.

As we move forward, it’s important to note that the store and café sales will continue to support the Outpost’s mission to be a true gathering place—offering not only great food but also enhanced resilience when the power is out, access to healthy meals, and support for our communities in both good times and emergencies. The Outpost will work to provide enhanced economic, educational, and employment opportunities, emergency support, and foster community cohesion in the geographically broad, culturally diverse, and underrepresented South Coast region of San Mateo County.

Janet Clark, our neighbor (who lives about as far from the store as we do, just in the opposite direction), will be stepping in as the new leader of the Loma Mar Outpost. Janet is a familiar face in the area, having served as the president of the Pescadero Community Foundation and on the Cuesta La Honda Guild board of directors. She’s got a deep background in nonprofit work, marketing, and—maybe most importantly—a powerful commitment to our South Coast communities. She’ll be working alongside Marcy and Nichole, who will continue bringing you the same great experiences and service you’ve come to love.

This transition opens up so many more opportunities for the Outpost to serve our area. From hosting community dinners to offering educational workshops, and supporting local producers, parks, and projects, the Outpost is here to help our communities thrive. And while the mission of this special place expands, the familiar faces and comforts of the store will remain the same. You can still count on us for recommendations on the best hiking trails or when high tide will hit the beach.

We couldn’t be more grateful for the support you’ve shown us over the years. Your friendship, loyalty, and love have been the heart of this project, and we’re excited to see where it goes next.

With love and gratitude,
Jeff and Kate Haas

The Loma Mar Store transformed from a lumber mill, to a Post Office, to the general store and kitchen you see today.
